Lightwire is a proud to be backing the Dr. Murray Pearson and Lightwire Undergraduate Scholarship, supporting one lucky student in their second year of study in an undergraduate degree in computer science.
“Lightwire continues to recruit a number of graduates from UoW each year and has a strong partnership with the university and its students, this scholarship adds another layer to that while also acknowledging the great work Murray did here at Lightwire.” says Brendan Ritchie, CEO of Lightwire’s business division.
The motivation behind the Scholarship
Murray Pearson was a lecturer at Waikato University in the Computer Sciences department and became the creator and project lead on a study to develop rural wireless connectivity. The success of this study prompted the creation of RuralLink. RuralLink offered wireless internet connectivity to rural communities in the Waikato, with Murray as the founder. Later RuralLink was renamed to Lightwire when Andrew Johnson (managing director of London Green Group) purchased the business. Murray stayed with Lightwire as it grew until his departure in 2017. Our desire to support the Computer Science students at the University of Waikato is a combination of honouring the work that Murray did, and supporting a department from which many of our past and present employees have graduated.
