In addition to static addresses and PPPoE, Lightwire Business Ultrafast Broadband (UFB)* connections can now automatically receive IP addresses using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
With DHCP, there’s no need to manually set up IP addresses – connections will be ready to go immediately, providing a faster, smoother online experience for you and your customers.
* Chorus, Enable and Tuatahi First Fibre UFB coverage areas only.
Simplified Business Connections
NZ UFB Connections: DHCP is now available for UFB business connections in New Zealand.* DHCP is ideal for Hyperfibre.
Simple Setup for Faster Deployment: Say goodbye to complicated configurations! There’s no need to manually enter addresses, subnets, or DNS servers, and no usernames or passwords required. Simply plug in, and get online.
This makes setting up service faster for both you and your customers. Routers can be shipped directly to customers, saving time and effort to get them connected.
- How To Set Up DHCP:
- Select VLAN 10 and DHCP on your router and devices.
- Devices will automatically receive an IP address as soon as they connect.
Simplified Management: With DHCP, devices automatically receive everything needed to connect —an IP address, gateway, and DNS settings — making network management easier than ever.
Future-Proofed: Reach more devices and services using the future-proofed IPv6 protocol.
Dual-Stack IPv4 and IPv6 Support
With DHCP we’re enabling Dual-Stack so you can have both IPv4 and IPv6 connections provisioned by default and allowing networks to handle both address types. This ensures broader compatibility, improved performance, and future-proofing as more services adopt IPv6.
- Business Customers: Receive one static IPv4 address as standard along with a /48 of public IPv6 addresses
- Additional IPv4 or IPv6 subnets are available for purchase. Contact our support team
Public IPv6 addresses enable direct internet connectivity by eliminating the need for Network Address Translation (NAT), simplifying communication and reducing the overhead associated with NAT traversal. This can improve performance for applications like real-time communications, online gaming, and IoT devices, where direct connections are advantageous. Performance benefits depend on proper network configuration and the specific needs of the application.
Benefits of Dual-Stack
Better Compatibility: Dual-stack supports both IPv4 (widely used) and IPv6 (more modern), ensuring your devices can connect to any website or service.
NOTE: although using both IPv4 and IPv6 together provides compatibility, securing your network requires proper configuration and monitoring of both protocols.
Future-proofed: IPv6 offers an almost unlimited number of IP addresses, ensuring connections can handle future technology and services that rely on it.
Enhanced Security: Compared to static IPv4 addresses – IPv6 improves security by using features like IPsec to encrypt data, authenticate connections, and ensure data integrity. It also includes privacy tools that create random addresses to improve anonymity and reduce tracking.
Avoid Address Shortages: As IPv4 addresses become scarce, IPv6 offers the necessary space to keep networks running smoothly as more services adopt it. Reach more devices and services using the future-proofed IPv6 protocol.
Firewall considerations
To ensure proper protection and secure internet access, firewall settings should be reviewed to make sure it can handle IPv6 traffic like it does with IPv4. Customers should only have necessary ports open and block any suspicious traffic.
It’s also important to protect against IPv6-specific attacks, like address spoofing. Regularly updating rules and watching for unusual activity helps keep the network secure.
Key Notes
- Available in NZ for Chorus, Enable and Tuatahi First Fibre UFB coverage areas only.
- DHCP is currently unavailable for Australian nbn® connections, however our team are working on it. Stay tuned!
- We’ll continue providing connections with an agreed default using /31 or PPPoE – unless you want to change.
- Existing customers in the Chorus and Enable coverage areas who are using PPPoE can move to DHCP without our involvement. Simply select VLAN 10 and DHCP on your router to make the automatic switch to DHCP.
- Existing customers in the Tuatahi First Fibre coverage areas who are using PPPoE need to contact our support team to make the switch to DHCP.
- Connections using /31 addressing will not automatically switch to DHCP. Please get in touch with our support team if you would like to make this change.
